Demonstrative Adjectives — Les adjectifs démonstratifs

Demonstrative adjectives are used to point out specific nouns, equivalent to 'this', 'that', 'these', or 'those' in English. They agree in gender and number with the noun they modify.

Rules

Ce — used before masculine singular nouns starting with a consonant (ce livre = this book)
Cet — used before masculine singular nouns starting with a vowel or silent 'h' (cet homme = this man)
Cette — used before feminine singular nouns (cette fille = this girl)
Ces — used before all plural nouns (ces enfants = these children)
Add -ci to the noun for 'this/these' (closer) or -là for 'that/those' (farther)

Examples

Ce garçon est mon ami. — This boy is my friend.
Cet arbre est très vieux. — This tree is very old.
Cette robe est magnifique. — This dress is magnificent.
Ces fleurs sont belles. — These flowers are beautiful.
Je préfère ce livre-ci. — I prefer this book (here).
Cette maison-là est grande. — That house (over there) is big.
