Imparfait — L'imparfait
The imparfait (imperfect) describes ongoing or habitual actions in the past, background descriptions, or states of being. It is formed by taking the nous form of the present tense, removing -ons, and adding imperfect endings.
Rules
Formation: nous present stem (minus -ons) + -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient
Example: nous parlons → parl- → je parlais, tu parlais, il parlait, nous parlions, vous parliez, ils parlaient
Only exception: être → j'étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient
Used for: habitual past actions ('used to'), descriptions, ongoing actions, weather, time, age
Often contrasted with passé composé (completed action vs ongoing/habitual)
Examples
Quand j'étais petit, je jouais dans le jardin. — When I was little, I used to play in the garden.
Il faisait beau ce jour-là. — The weather was nice that day.
Nous habitions à Lyon avant. — We used to live in Lyon before.
Elle avait les cheveux longs. — She had long hair.
Il pleuvait quand je suis sorti. — It was raining when I went out.
Tu regardais la télé tous les soirs. — You used to watch TV every evening.
