Imperative — L'impératif

The imperative mood is used to give commands, instructions, advice, or make requests. It is conjugated only in three forms: tu, nous, and vous. The subject pronoun is dropped.

Rules

Tu form: same as present tense but drop the -s for -er verbs (Parle ! = Speak!)
Nous form: same as present tense (Parlons ! = Let's speak!)
Vous form: same as present tense (Parlez ! = Speak!)
-IR and -RE verbs keep the -s in the tu form (Finis ! = Finish!, Attends ! = Wait!)
Irregular: être → sois, soyons, soyez / avoir → aie, ayons, ayez / savoir → sache, sachons, sachez
Negative imperative: Ne + verb + pas (Ne parle pas ! = Don't speak!)

Examples

Mange tes légumes ! — Eat your vegetables!
Parlons français ! — Let's speak French!
Écoutez bien la leçon. — Listen to the lesson carefully.
Ne fais pas de bruit. — Don't make noise.
Soyez patients ! — Be patient!
Allons-y ! — Let's go!
N'oublie pas ton cahier. — Don't forget your notebook.
