Plus-que-parfait, Le plus-que-parfait
The plus-que-parfait (pluperfect) describes an action that had happened before another past action. It is equivalent to 'had done' in English. It is formed with the imperfect of avoir or être + past participle.
Rules
Formation: subject + avoir/être (imparfait) + past participle
Avoir (imparfait): j'avais, tu avais, il avait, nous avions, vous aviez, ils avaient
Être (imparfait): j'étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient

Examples
J'avais déjà mangé quand il est arrivé. (I had already eaten when he arrived.)
Elle était partie avant moi. (She had left before me.)
Nous avions fini nos devoirs. (We had finished our homework.)
Il avait plu toute la journée. (It had rained all day.)
Tu avais déjà vu ce film ? (Had you already seen this film?)
Ils étaient allés à la plage. (They had gone to the beach.)
