Dans le roman, il s'agit d'un jeune homme qui s'appelle Alain qui est l'héritier du domaine de Maltaverne en Landes. Il aime une fille qui s'appelle Marie. Il l'a rencontrée dans une librairie mais elle n'a pas de dot et ne veut pas se marier. La mère dominante d'Alain, à qui rien n'intéresse que l'argent, n'aime pas Marie. La seule personne à qui Alain confie ses plus secrètes pensées est Simon, le fils de son régisseur et un abbé. C'est un roman émouvant. Si tu veux, je te le prêterai.
